Optimizing nitrogen application boosts maize yield and water efficiency significantly.
Applying nitrogen fertilizer to Zea mays plants affects soil moisture, nitrate levels, and crop yield. The study found that soil moisture and nitrate levels in the topsoil varied more with nitrogen application than in deeper soil layers. Not using nitrogen fertilizer increased water content in the topsoil but decreased it in deeper soil layers. Applying nitrogen increased nitrate levels significantly. The best results for crop yield, water use efficiency, and nitrogen use efficiency were seen with 120-240 kg/hm2 of nitrogen fertilizer. Yield and efficiency did not increase significantly with higher nitrogen application rates.
