Shared sanitation, like neighbor-shared toilets, is often unhygienic. However, recent research shows that smaller shared toilets work better than large communal ones. In India, community-built sanitation blocks have been successful in poor urban areas. Hiring a caretaker to keep these facilities clean is crucial. This type of shared sanitation should be considered 'basic' or 'safely-managed', helping to meet sanitation goals in developing countries.
