Water scarcity in South Africa addressed through innovative hydrological modelling.
Water scarcity in South Africa requires new water management strategies. The study focused on managing water resources in the Umdloti River. Limited data availability was a challenge, but hydrological modeling techniques were used to assess streamflow and observed data. The goal was to sustain water supply sources to meet population growth demands. Hazelmere Dam was modeled to benefit downstream users economically and ecologically. Six probability distribution models were developed to estimate monthly streamflow at the dam. The study spanned 19 years of data (1994-2013) and aimed to find sustainable water management solutions for the region.
