Diabetes-induced kidney growth linked to growth hormone levels in mice.
The study looked at how diabetes affects insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) in the kidneys of mice with different growth hormone levels. They found that kidney IGF-I increased in normal and growth hormone-transgenic mice, but not in growth hormone-deficient dwarf mice. This increase was more significant in growth hormone-transgenic mice. The presence of growth hormone seems to be necessary for this increase in kidney IGF-I. Additionally, kidney weight increased in growth hormone-transgenic mice after diabetes induction, while plasma IGF-I levels decreased initially in all mice.
