Invasive alien species threatens Japanese tidal flats, native plants at risk.
The smooth cordgrass Spartina alterniflora, originally from North America, was discovered in Japan in 2008. It has invaded tidal flats in Aichi and Kumamoto Prefectures, outcompeting native reed grass Phragmites australis. In 2014, Japan labeled all Spartina species as invasive. Despite efforts to eradicate it, S. alterniflora continues to spread in Japan. Researchers compared the physical characteristics of S. alterniflora and P. australis to help detect the invasive species early on Japanese tidal flats.
