The homeotic genes in fruit flies control which body parts develop in each segment. When these genes are disrupted, body parts can be misplaced. These genes produce proteins that control other genes. Scientists know a lot about the genes that control the homeotic genes, but not much about the genes they control. Some target genes have been identified, but more research is needed to understand these interactions better.
