Boosting Tree Potassium Leads to Higher Pecan Yield and Quality
Elevating tree potassium levels in pecan orchards can reduce fruit drop and increase nut yield and quality. By adding potash to the soil, the potassium concentration in leaves and fruit can be raised, leading to better fruit retention and higher nutmeat yield. The study found that fruit with higher potassium levels were less likely to drop prematurely, establishing a threshold for potassium levels in fruit. Even if trees show sufficient potassium levels in their leaves, young fruit may still need more potassium. This suggests that managing potassium levels in pecan trees, especially the 'Desirable' cultivar, can have significant benefits for fruit retention and overall yield.
