Constructed wetlands improve rural sewage treatment, boosting water quality in China.
The researchers studied how well different depths of constructed wetlands treat rural sewage in China. They found that the 60 cm deep wetland removed more COD and total phosphorus, while the 40 cm deep wetland removed more nitrogen. The main ways the wetlands removed pollutants were through nitrification/denitrification for nitrogen and absorption/sedimentation for phosphorus. Plant harvesting also helped remove some nitrogen and phosphorus from the water.
