New research reveals how plants protect themselves from harsh light conditions.
Tobacco plants were studied to see if a specific protein helps protect them from damage caused by too much light. The researchers compared normal plants to ones lacking this protein and found that both types were equally affected by high light levels. They also discovered that the protein does not shield a key part of the plant's photosynthesis process from light stress. Instead, the plant has a different defense mechanism that helps it deal with excess light energy.
