Rice-bran Therapy Shows Promise in Treating Calcium Kidney Stones.
Rice-bran therapy was tested on patients with calcium kidney stones and high calcium levels in their urine. The study found that giving defatted rice-bran reduced urine calcium levels in most patients. The higher dose of rice-bran showed a greater decrease in urine calcium. The therapy did not affect blood calcium or phosphorus levels. Patients who stopped taking rice-bran saw their urine calcium levels return to normal. Rice-bran was more effective than wheat-bran in reducing urine calcium. The therapy had no serious side effects and could be a useful treatment for this condition.
