Cliff erosion identified as major sediment source impacting SW Portugal coast.
The study looked at sediment sources and transport pathways on the SW coast of Portugal. They analyzed sediment samples from different areas and used techniques to identify where the sediment comes from and how it moves. The results showed that cliff erosion is the main source of sediment in the area, while the inlet mouth contributes less. Most of the sediment on the shelf is sandy, except for some muddy areas near the tidal delta. Sediment transport on the inner shelf goes landward and northward on one side of the canyon head, and seaward on the other side. Sediment also moves in both directions along the shore.
