Logging Practices Impact Forest Productivity and Soil Health in Boreal Regions
Logging and fires can affect the health of black spruce forests. In areas where fires are rare, logging can lead to a build-up of organic material on the forest floor, reducing tree growth. Different logging methods and prescribed burning can impact soil thickness and tree height. High-severity fires and prescribed burning can result in taller trees with better nutrition, while low-severity fires and careful logging have different effects on ground cover. Thicker organic layers in the soil can hinder tree growth, with a threshold of around 23 cm. Overall, the study found that high-severity fires and prescribed burning can help maintain forest productivity in paludified black spruce stands.
