Surgery in Rats Leads to Muscle Protein Loss, Study Finds.
Surgery in rats leads to increased breakdown of muscle proteins, especially in the sarcoplasmic-muscle fraction. The rats that underwent surgery lost muscle protein primarily due to a decrease in the synthesis of myofibrillar protein. This loss of muscle protein was not caused by a decrease in food intake, as even rats with restricted food intake did not show the same changes in protein turnover as the operated rats.
