New study reveals key factors influencing kidney's potassium uptake efficiency.
The researchers looked at how different factors affect how rabbit kidneys absorb potassium. They found that a hormone called deoxycorticosterone acetate helps the kidneys take up potassium better, even when potassium levels in the tissue are not changed much. Potassium chloride, on the other hand, increased tissue potassium levels but did not affect potassium uptake. Two organic bases did not impact potassium uptake, but ammonium chloride reduced it when present in the same amount as potassium.
