Sex differences in desire for physical touch impact marital harmony.
The study looked at 56 couples to understand how they feel about being held and holding each other. They wanted to know if there are differences between men and women in wanting physical closeness, what reasons people have for wanting to be held, and if men see physical contact differently than women. The researchers found that men and women have different preferences for being held or holding, with women usually wanting to be held for emotional reasons. Men can separate physical contact from sexual intimacy, and differences in desires for physical closeness can lead to problems in relationships.
