Reduced grazing pressure in China boosts grassland health and herder incomes.
Reducing grazing pressure in the typical steppe of north China can benefit both production and the environment. A study found that moderate grazing pressure is best for maintaining a productive grassland, profitable livestock system, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Lower stocking rates can lead to improved grassland composition and higher sheep weight gain. Resting the grassland early in the summer helps maintain desirable grass species but may reduce incomes. Overall, reducing grazing pressure by half can improve ecosystem services while still supporting herder incomes.
