Drought-resistant wheat varieties in China offer hope for food security.
Local wheat varieties in Shanxi Province of China were studied to see how well they can handle drought conditions. The researchers looked at different traits of the wheat plants under normal and dry conditions to see which ones were most important for drought resistance. They found that factors like plant height, leaf area, and certain enzyme activities were key for drought resistance. Based on their findings, they classified the wheat varieties into three groups: drought-resistant, intermediate, and sensitive. Two varieties, Baiheshangtou and Zhuganqing, were identified as highly drought-resistant and could be good choices for breeding more drought-resistant wheat.
