Zinc deficiency in pregnancy linked to birth defects, but zinc supplementation helps.
Zinc deficiency during pregnancy can harm the development of babies. Researchers studied how zinc deficiency affects rat embryos and if giving zinc supplements helps. They had four groups of rats: normal, restricted, zinc deficient, and zinc deficient with zinc supplements. The zinc deficient rats had lower weight gain and smaller embryos. Their organs also developed slower. But when they got zinc supplements, the embryos grew better and their organs developed properly. This shows that zinc deficiency can harm baby development, but giving zinc supplements can help fix it.
