A study in Ethiopia tested different irrigation methods for growing tomatoes and cabbage in a dry area. They found that using 5 mm of water per day per square meter is best for quality and quantity. Basin and furrow irrigation worked well for these crops. Watering cans and drip irrigation can save water by giving smaller amounts more often, instead of a lot at once.
