Milk-based porridge reduces absorption of essential nutrients in supplements.
The study looked at how well the body absorbs iron, zinc, folate, and vitamin C from a multi-micronutrient supplement when taken with a milk-based cornstarch porridge. They tested this by measuring the levels of these nutrients in the blood over 8 hours in healthy women. The results showed that when the supplement was combined with the porridge, the absorption of iron, zinc, and folate was slightly lower compared to taking the supplement alone. However, the decrease in absorption was small, and the porridge was still a good way to deliver the multi-micronutrient supplement.
