Lettuce Linked to Severe Gastrointestinal Outbreaks in Nottingham, UK.
Two outbreaks of a type of harmful E. coli bacteria happened in Nottingham, UK in June 2014. One outbreak was linked to a restaurant, and the other to a wedding. Lettuce was identified as the likely source of infection in the restaurant outbreak, but the exact source of the bacteria remains unknown. The same type of E. coli was found in both outbreaks, but no direct connection between them was found. This shows that this type of E. coli can cause serious outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness and should be considered in foodborne outbreaks in Europe.
