Freshwater shrimp thrive best in cooler temperatures, study finds.
Freshwater shrimp Gmelinoides fasciatus were studied to see how they handle different water temperatures and salinities. The shrimps were found to be most tolerant to high temperatures in fresh water at 22-26 degrees C. Their ability to handle high salinity decreased as the temperature increased. Shrimps adapted to lower temperatures (12-14 degrees C) were the most resilient. Larger shrimps were more stable in high temperatures, while salinity tolerance increased with body length in brackish water. Overall, temperatures below 22 degrees C were best for shrimp acclimation in brackish water.
