Coastal erosion threat increases in Mekong Delta due to sediment dynamics.
The study looked at how sediment moves in the Mekong River Delta using computer simulations. They found that sediments mostly settle near the river mouth when the water is calm, but get carried further out to sea when there are big waves. Waves from the Southeast push sediment all along the coast, while waves from the South and Southwest cause erosion and move sediment towards the Northeast. During the low flow season, sediment transport along the coast goes from the Southwest to the Northeast, with less sediment being moved as you go towards the Northeast.
