Liver disease disrupts thyroid function, alters hormone distribution in body
The study found that when rats had toxic hepatitis, their thyroid glands changed how they worked. The levels of iodine and thyroid hormones in their blood went up, but in most other body tissues, these levels went down. However, the kidneys had higher levels of iodine. The amount of non-hormonal iodine in the blood and tissues stayed mostly the same, except for in the liver, heart, and lungs where it decreased.
