Microfinance boosts adoption of eco-sanitation in densely populated urban areas.
The study looked at how people in crowded urban areas in Malawi feel about using ecological sanitation, a type of sustainable toilet system. Most property owners liked the idea of ecological sanitation because it's safer and more durable than regular pit latrines. However, many thought it was too expensive and inconvenient to use. When offered financial help, more property owners were willing to try ecological sanitation. People preferred to improve their pit latrines rather than switch to ecological sanitation if space was limited. This shows that for sustainable toilet systems to be popular, they need to be affordable, easy to use, and fit the needs of the community.
