Irrigation and agriculture impacting groundwater quality in Northwest China oasis.
Groundwater in the Heihe River Basin in northwest China is mainly recharged by river and irrigation water, with only a small amount coming from mountain-block sources. The water quality changes from the mountains to the oasis due to dedolomitization, which is influenced by modern agriculture. Groundwater recharge occurred at different time scales, with older water dating back to 2000-7000 years ago and younger water being recharged at a much higher rate due to irrigation practices. Human activities have significantly impacted both the quantity and quality of groundwater in the region.
