Bird populations regulated by environment-driven fluctuations, impacting ecosystem stability.
Bird populations fluctuate in size due to changes in the environment and density-dependent mortality. A study of 13 bird populations found that fluctuations in population size are mainly driven by environmental factors. When populations are small, recruitment variation is key, while near carrying capacity, mortality plays a bigger role. This supports the idea that bird population fluctuations result from differences between recruitment and mortality during the non-breeding season.
