China's coastal regions have grown faster than non-coastal areas due to preferential economic policies. The government aims to spread this growth to interior regions. However, there is a significant imbalance in development between the east and west. To address this, a Western Area Development Strategy was introduced in 1999. The study emphasizes the importance of understanding how different regions' economies influence each other.
