Coated urea reduces ammonia emissions, benefiting rice cultivation and environment.
Ammonia gas released from coated urea and regular urea was studied in rice fields. The amount of ammonia gas released was influenced by the pH and ammonium levels in the water. Ammonia gas release was higher in water with pH above 8.0. After applying urea, the most gas was released 7-10 days later. Coated urea released less ammonia gas compared to regular urea, likely due to lower ammonium levels in the water. The loss of nitrogen through ammonia gas was reduced by 75-79% with coated urea compared to regular urea.
