Boost wheat yield and reduce yellow berry incidence with optimal nitrogen levels
A study was conducted to see how different amounts of nitrogen affected wheat growth in dryland areas of Central India. They tested five wheat varieties with different nitrogen levels over two years. The results showed that applying 60 kg of nitrogen per hectare led to the highest wheat yield compared to lower or higher amounts. Some wheat varieties, like HI 1500, HW 2004, and Sujata, did better than others in terms of yield and dry matter accumulation. Using nitrogen also reduced the occurrence of yellow berries in the wheat. Overall, applying 60 kg of nitrogen per hectare improved wheat yield, dry matter accumulation, spike number, grain weight, and reduced yellow berry incidence in rainfed conditions. HI 1500 was found to be a good variety for these conditions with high nitrogen use efficiency.
