Soybean reduces herbicide contamination in soil, protecting water sources.
Soybean plants can affect how a herbicide called metolachlor moves through the soil. Researchers studied this by looking at how much metolachlor moved through soil with and without soybean plants over a year. They found that less metolachlor moved through soil with soybean plants, and less of it ended up in the water. In fact, only a small percentage of the herbicide made its way into the water, and the levels were safe for drinking. The way the herbicide moved was different in areas with crops compared to areas without crops. Overall, this study shows that having soybean plants in the field can impact how herbicides move through the soil.
