Overestimated coal supply threatens future energy development and sustainability.
Coal availability studies have shown that current estimates of coal resources are often too optimistic due to various restrictions on mining. A program was started in 1987 to identify these constraints and estimate the remaining coal resources available for development. Study areas were chosen based on production history, resource potential, and data availability to represent different geological and cultural variations. The findings suggest that there may be less coal available for development than previously thought, due to these restrictions.
