Multidisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity are different in academic institutions. Researchers studied U.S. iSchools to see if having multiple disciplines leads to more collaborations among faculty. They found that higher levels of multidisciplinarity actually result in fewer and less diverse collaborations among faculty members. Simply having a mix of disciplines is not enough to encourage collaborations.
