Green manures boost rice yields without harming companion crops in Nepal
Relay-planted green manures like Dhaincha and rice bean can replace chemical fertilizers for growing rice in Nepal. A study in the Western Hills found that using these green manures resulted in rice yields similar to those with chemical fertilizers, without reducing maize yields. Rice bean performed better in low soil moisture conditions. This method could help sustain rice production in intensive cropping systems and subsistence farming with fewer external inputs.
