Mangrove-lined creeks key feeding grounds for fish, study finds.
Mangroves are important feeding grounds for fish, but the extent of their importance depends on the type of mangrove habitat. A study in Tanzania compared mangrove-lined creeks that retain water during low tides to fringing mangroves that drain completely. Fish in mangrove-lined creeks primarily feed from the mangrove habitat, while fish in fringing mangroves feed from both the mangroves and adjacent habitats. This difference is likely due to the continuous access provided by mangrove-lined creeks, allowing fish more time to feed compared to fish in fringing mangroves that have to migrate with the tides.
