The article explores how German colonial history traces back to the early modern era, before the official colonial empire. The author suggests that eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century German literature on Latin America contained hidden colonial desires that later influenced the actual colonial movement in the 1880s. This shows that the idea of colonialism existed in German society long before the official start of the colonial empire.
