Breakthrough Biofuel Process Unlocks Abundant Corn Stover for Sustainable Energy
Corn stover was treated with a new mix of chemicals and then broken down into sugars using enzymes. The researchers found that the best pH levels for getting the most sugar from the breakdown were around 4.4 for total sugar, 4.2-5.7 for glucose, and 4.0-4.7 for xylan. Using xylanase in the process helped break down xylan and improved the sugar yields by preventing enzymes from sticking to other stuff. This study shows that adjusting the pH and adding xylanase can make the breakdown of corn stover more efficient for making biofuels.
