University spin-offs can boost innovation in metropolitan areas and enhance their competitiveness. A study of 247 USOs in 11 Italian cities found that these spin-out activities help improve the innovative capabilities of metropolitan areas, regardless of their size. The innovative performance of these areas also leads to increased competitiveness. While USOs play a positive role in moderating the relationship between innovation and competitiveness, their impact is relatively minor.
