This paper discusses different aspects of studying urban ethnic groups in China. It focuses on three main areas: overseas Chinese identity in Chinese cities, minority groups blending into big cities, and regional identities of new migrants. The author emphasizes the importance of understanding primordialism, ethnogenesis, rational choice of ethnic identity, and the role of historic memory in shaping identities.
