New Coal Gasification Process Promises Abundant, Affordable Natural Gas for America
The HYGAS Process is a method to make methane gas from coal to help increase America's gas supply. It uses high heat and pressure in a special bed to convert coal into gas. The Institute of Gas Technology came up with the idea, and it is being funded by the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration and the American Gas Association. They are testing the process in a pilot plant that can make a lot of gas each day. They have successfully used different types of coal, like Montana lignite and Illinois No. 6 bituminous coal, to make gas. Now, they are working on using a different type of coal called subbituminous coal from the Rosebud seam.
