The researchers developed a new way to evaluate the cost performance of using pulverized coal in blast furnaces. They introduced the concept of effective calorific value to measure the actual thermal energy provided by the coal. Their model considers both the quality of the coal and the cost of injecting it into the furnace. By applying this model in a large iron and steel company in China, they found that it helps in selecting the best coal for blast furnaces.
