Endangered Donkeys Saved Through Groundbreaking Embryo Cryopreservation Technique
Donkey populations in Europe are at risk, so scientists are using embryo technologies to help conserve endangered equid species. They have successfully transferred donkey embryos to recipients, but few foals are born from cryopreserved embryos. In vitro fertilization studies have not resulted in pregnancies yet. Donkeys could be used for dairy production, and preserving endangered breeds may drive the use of embryo technologies in this species. However, funding for research in this area is limited, especially in Europe.
