Peanut Oil in Cosmetics Safe, But Flour Raises Concerns for Allergies.
Peanut oil, hydrogenated peanut oil, peanut acid, and peanut glycerides are safe for use in cosmetics. They help condition skin, cleanse, and increase viscosity. Peanut flour, however, is not as safe due to differences in its composition. Peanut oil can help other compounds absorb into the skin but may cause liver changes in rats. It is not irritating to most animals and is not carcinogenic. Peanuts are a common allergen, but the proteins causing allergies do not transfer to the oils. Manufacturers need to ensure oils are free of toxins and proteins. Peanut oil is safe for cosmetic use, but peanut flour is not recommended.
