New protein extraction method uncovers key to fighting antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
The researchers wanted to find the best way to extract total proteins from Enterococcus faecalis biofilm, a bacteria that causes dental infections. They used ultrasonication with specific settings and tested different protein detection methods. The best conditions were 2 minutes of processing, 20% amplitude, and 4 seconds of ultrasonication at a 50% duty cycle. The Bradford Coomassie brilliant blue assay was the most effective in measuring the total protein content in the biofilm, showing 3793.8 mg/dish.
