Salty Wastewater Threatens Biological Treatment Efficiency, Disrupting Water Purification
High salt levels in wastewater can harm microorganisms used in treatment, reducing efficiency. Adding 8g/L of salt decreased removal of pollutants by around 70%. Treatment efficiency dropped significantly when total dissolved solids exceeded 4000 mg/L, with a strong decrease at 8000 mg/L. To improve treatment of salty wastewater, options like dilution, sanitation, or using non-biological methods are recommended.
