Heat treatment of beech wood reveals surprising chemical changes and color impact.
The researchers studied how beech wood changes color and chemically after light steaming and heat treatment. Light steaming caused minor chemical changes, while heat treatments led to visible changes in the FTIR spectra. The heat treatments resulted in a decrease in carbonyl absorption and an increase in lignin absorption bands. The ratios of relevant absorption bands showed complex chemical changes, including hydrolytic, oxidative, and condensation reactions. The ThermoWood process showed more advanced modifications compared to the laboratory procedure.
