Latin America Faces Tough Agricultural Trade Liberalization Challenges in WTO Talks
A new round of WTO negotiations is coming up in 2001, and Latin American countries are facing tougher challenges than before. Domestic lobbying groups are putting pressure on these countries to scrutinize the negotiation agenda more closely. In the past, Latin American and Caribbean countries didn't have to make many changes because they had already liberalized their trade policies. But now, they are expected to be more active in the discussions, especially in response to pressures from producers of goods that compete with imports. Food security is a big concern for some countries, who worry that further trade liberalization could threaten their ability to feed their people.
