Optimizing planting density boosts waxy corn yield and quality.
Planting waxy corn variety Jingcaihuanuo No. 5 at a density of 64500 plants per hectare in Nanjing during spring resulted in the highest fresh ear yield. Increasing planting density led to earlier harvest, shorter growth period, taller plants and ears, shorter ear length, more tapered ears, fewer rows per ear, longer bald tips, and varying kernel and grain numbers. Despite smaller individual ear weight, overall yield increased with higher planting density between 42000 and 72000 plants per hectare.
