Excessive nutrients in reservoirs fueling algae blooms, threatening drinking water quality.
The study looked at diatom communities in reservoirs in Southeast China. They found that high nutrient levels in the water led to diatom blooms, with Bacillariophyta being the most important group. Deep water favored Bacillariophyta, while high catchment-to-reservoir capacity ratios increased algae bloom risk. Managing catchments is crucial to prevent algae blooms and protect drinking water quality.
