Climate change and human activities causing drastic decline in Yellow River runoff.
The Yellow River in China is experiencing less water flow due to both climate change and human activities. A study analyzed rainfall and water flow data from 1956 to 2010. They found that many areas in the lower part of the basin are getting less rain, leading to reduced water flow. The amount of water in the river has been decreasing, especially in the downstream areas. Changes in the relationship between rainfall and water flow have been detected since the 1970s, with human activities playing a big role in these changes. In some parts of the river, human actions are responsible for over 80% of the decrease in water flow.
